sam Houston tollway auxiliary lane additions & plaza improvements
Aguirre & Fields served as the lead consultant, responsible for project oversight and design for widening the existing Sam Houston Tollway facility from four northbound and southbound auxiliary lanes to five lanes between Westview Drive and Clay Road. The project scope included toll plaza reconstruction for the Hammerly and Clay entrance and exit ramps.
Originally planned as three separate projects:
- The auxiliary lane widening
- The Hammerly entrance and exit ramp reconstructions
- The Clay Road entrance and exit ramp reconstructions
HCTRA asked Aguirre & Fields to combine the remainder of the three projects into one bid package. As the Project Manager, the firm redesigned the northbound Clay Road exit ramp and the toll plaza to accommodate both an EZ Tag lane and a cash lane, revised the traffic control and pavement marking plans originally done by others to incorporate the three separate projects, coordinated final plans from four different consultants, provided CTMS plans, revised the structural foundations for all four of the ramp plaza reconstructions, provided general notes and specifications, and combined all quantities into one bid package. Aguirre & Fields also provided construction phase services to answer RFIs from the contractor on all portions of the design, including those done by others.
Aguirre & Fields redesigned foundations previously designed by others and saved approximately $100,000. The firm assembled three sets of plans, requiring uniform details, which saved money due to standardized details between all consultants.
